When I first wrote about the impact of COVID, I, like most of you, could not anticipate the road ahead.

Over the last year, social distancing has been the necessary tool to ensure the health and well-being of our communities. Finding ways to stay connected, instantly and directly, while remaining physically apart became essential. Our purpose of keeping people connected directly and instantly to the conversations they choose to be part of via text messaging, was brought to life in ways that continue to humble and amaze me. There has never been a more important time for Community.

When areas all across the country were forced to lockdown—Community and its Leaders got to work. Leaders across the platform really leaned in to directly engage their audience via text messaging. Whether it was daily COVID-19 and vaccine updates from Dr. David Agus; Leaders like Kerry Washington, Kenan Thompson and others making sure people could get to the polls safely to vote in Georgia; launching a Local Optimist Hotline to provide mental health resources and support like MadHappy; throwing a virtual pizza party that benefited healthcare workers like Des Rocs; Brad Paisley hosting zoom happy hours; offering tips on how to keep yourself busy like Jenny Han; using our platform to provide support for their small businesses, like Slutty Vegan; having conversations around mental health, relationships, and vulnerability with We’re Not Really Strangers—the innovation born out of necessity and resilience of our communities, makes me hopeful and incredibly proud to have created technology that drives real impact.

To date, Community has powered over 3B texts—keeping over 25MM Members directly and instantly connected to what they care most about. And for the Leaders who were not immune to the challenges of this year, we offered support with COVID-relief initiatives that offered discounts and special rates to stay connected on our platform, commitments and programs like Amplify that support small businesses to drive economic growth, and more. We are a Community, and together we are only as strong as our weakest link.
